Innovative and Fun English Learning Tool Movielearn™ Launches in Hong Kong with Initial DVD Title “The Apprentice”

Hong Kong, July 2006 - Movielearn Hong Kong Ltd. officially launched its English learning edutainment software called Movielearn at the recently concluded Hong Kong Book Fair, which attracted over 600,000 visitors.

With the release of its initial DVD title, FremantleMedia’s hit TV series “The Apprentice”, Movielearn introduces to the market a new way of learning everyday spoken English with movies on the computer.

A hybrid of education and entertainment, the Movielearn software integrates specially developed, user-friendly English learning features, making it a powerful tool for helping students improve their English skills. As Hollywood movies are a source of conversational or colloquial English, Movielearn exposes learners to every day spoken English not always taught in textbooks or other traditional educational materials.

“Movielearn is the first product of its kind to launch into the edutainment field for teenagers and adults in Hong Kong, and is ideal for intermediate to advanced English learners,” says Susan MacDonald, Movielearn’s Licensing and Business Development Head. “The Movielearn application is dynamic, interactive, and very user-friendly. It does not require the user to learn a whole range of commands, nor does it have complex user or software requirements.”

When the user watches the movie on the computer and does not understand the English, the movie can be paused by just pressing the space bar or enter key on the computer and the application takes the user to sophisticated learning panels to explain the English. The user can even build a Personal Learning account saving any selected key words for learning.

Movielearn’s innovative learning tools help:

·         Sharpen listening and speaking ability

·         Enhance English vocabulary

·         Increase knowledge of English idioms, slang and their usage

·         Improve reading comprehension skills

In a globally trailblazing move, Movielearn Hong Kong Ltd., also a participating company of the much talked about Hong Kong Cyperport’s Incubation programme for the digital entertainment and multimedia industries, introduces this cutting edge digital learning tool to revolutionize the English learning landscape, particularly first in Hong Kong.

The first Movielearn release to hit the bookstore shelves, The Apprentice, from Emmy-Award winning producer Mark Burnett, is a bold reality series that tests competitors' survival techniques in New York City's corporate jungle. The candidates face weekly business challenges and strive to reach the top. One promising candidate will become an apprentice to U.S. business tycoon, Donald Trump. Season 1 was the highest rated new series of the 2003-04 Season, gaining an average audience of 20 million viewers.

The Apprentice is an excellent product to learn English as it provides a high level of colloquial and business English terms, as well as presents learners some insights on the U.S. business management culture,’ states Ms. Macdonald.

In addition to The Apprentice, Movielearn has also inked a licensing agreement with FremantleMedia Ltd. for the award-winning show Baywatch Season 5. Topbilled by David Hasselhoff, Yasmine Bleeth and Pamela Anderson, Baywatch brings the blue skies and beautiful beaches of Southern California to its viewers. It is summer on the beach, as explosive action, daring rescues, courage, teamwork and passion from the Baywatch lifeguard team all contribute to Baywatch's scorching success.

Following the release of these titles, Movielearn also plans to deal more major studios content of full-feature blockbuster films and family movies.

Ms. Macdonald sums up, “Movielearn presents a new method of learning everyday conversational English with movies on the PC, and is projected to attract movie-loving consumers seeking innovative ways to improve their English skills. We consider this a major leap forward for both Hong Kong’s English learning and digital entertainment industries.”
