Movielearn Seeks to Boost English Competency among Students and Professionals in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, January 31, 2007 – Movielearn Hong Kong Ltd., distributor of the groundbreaking ESL edutainment software called Movielearn that teaches everyday spoken English through movies on the computer, announces its participation in the Education and Careers Expo at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre from February 1 to 4, 2007.

Aside from exhibiting its new educational software, Movielearn seeks to intensify efforts in promoting English as a second language among students and professionals in Hong Kong.

Recently, the South China Post reported that data collated from immigration tests show that 42.9 per cent of Hong Kong Chinese students who applied for permanent residency after attending universities in Australia failed the English language competency tests. The Hong Kong results were worse than those of Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia, and only slightly better than that of mainland China, which was 43.2 %.

While the students reportedly have enough command of the language to cope in most situations, they are still not capable of conducting a sophisticated discourse at the professional level.

Moreover, a recent poll on the city's business competitiveness also found that 60% of 206 companies are dissatisfied with the English language skills in Hong Kong.

“We welcome the opportunity this expo provides to present to the market the new fun and dynamic method of learning everyday spoken English through a popular medium – the movies,” says Susan Macdonald, Movielearn’s Vice President. “No doubt we are faced with a rising demand for better English proficiency in the employment market here and abroad. Students and professionals need to upgrade their English skills to reap the greatest benefits possible as they map out their future.”

The Movielearn educational software is the latest innovation to hit the English learning market. It provides user-friendly English learning tools as people watch DVD movies on the computer.

“Movielearn helps overseas students with their conversational English skills before leaving to study in an English speaking country. It also helps professionals achieve brighter prospects in the English-driven markets,” says Ms. Macdonald.

Movielearn’s latest DVD release, The Apprentice, targets business English learners here and abroad. A hit TV series by FremantleMedia, The Apprentice, from Emmy-Award winning producer Mark Burnett, is a bold reality series that tests competitors' survival techniques in New York City's corporate jungle. The candidates face weekly business challenges and strive to reach the top. One promising candidate will become an apprentice to U.S. business tycoon, Donald Trump.

With its meaningful content and dynamic features, Movielearn helps users learn new phrases, idioms, expressions and English grammar structures common in business communication.

Ms. Macdonald says, “Learning English with the Apprentice not only exposes learners to business English as spoken by native speakers, it also gives insights into the U.S. business management culture and helps improve one’s leadership, presentation and negotiation skills.”
