Hong Kong, January 31, 2007 – Movielearn Hong Kong Ltd., distributor of the groundbreaking ESL edutainment software called Movielearn that teaches everyday spoken English through movies on the computer, announces its participation in the Education and Careers Expo at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre from February 1 to 4, 2007.
Aside from exhibiting its new educational software, Movielearn seeks to intensify efforts in promoting English as a second language among students and professionals in Hong Kong.
Recently, the South China Post reported that data collated from immigration tests show that 42.9 per cent of Hong Kong Chinese students who applied for permanent residency after attending universities in Australia failed the English language competency tests. The Hong Kong results were worse than those of Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia, and only slightly better than that of mainland China, which was 43.2 %.
While the students reportedly have enough command of the language to cope in most situations, they are still not capable of conducting a sophisticated discourse at the professional level.
Moreover, a recent poll on the city's business competitiveness also found that 60% of 206 companies are dissatisfied with the English language skills in Hong Kong.
